BMW M Team WRT Secures P5 in Challenging Sebring 12 Hours
The second round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship took place last Saturday at Sebring International Raceway, Florida, delivering plenty of action. Despite a tough weekend, the team secured key data and earned important points.
In the GTP class, starting from P8, the #24 BMW M Hybrid V8, with Sheldon van der Linde, Robin Frijns and Dries Vanthoor, worked its way into the leading group and fought for podium positions throughout a large part of the race. A late gamble during a Full Course Yellow
ultimately didn’t fall their way, with the car crossing the line in P5.
The #25 BMW M Hybrid V8 sister car, shared by Philipp Eng, Marco Wittmann and Kevin Magnussen, endured an early setback. Caught out by a spinning GTD car in traffic, the car sustained suspension damage that required lengthy repairs, dropping it down the order. The crew reacted quickly to minimise the time lost, allowing the car to rejoin and ultimately finish P10, while gathering important insights for the remainder of the season.
The points scored over the 12-hour race see BMW M Team WRT move into fourth place in the championship standings, with seven rounds remaining. Focus now shifts back to Europe, with the opening round of the GT World Challenge set to take place on April 10–11 at Circuit Paul
Ricard in the South of France.
Vincent Vosse, Team Principal Team WRT: “It was a tough weekend. At some stage we were looking good. But we gambled on the penultimate full course yellow, and it didn’t work out. Still it was a strong weekend from the guys. There are some positives to take away. We finished the race, still managed to take P5. Now we focus on the next one.”
