The BMW M Hybrid V8: Back to Le Mans and IMSA

On June 10, 2021, the BMW Group Board of Management approved BMW M Motorsport’s entry into the LMDh prototype class, selecting Dallara as its chassis partner. The BMW M Hybrid V8 completed its rollout on July 25 2022, at Dallara’s Varano de’ Melegari test track. From 2024, BMW’s first prototype since the BMW V12 LMR will compete in the FIA World Endurance Championship, marking 25 years since BMW’s last Le Mans victory. Two BMW M Hybrid V8s will race under BMW M Team WRT, with the team actively involved in the 2023 IMSA program launch and car development in Munich and Baudour.

In 2022, BMW M Motorsport marked its 50th anniversary with the launch of the BMW M Hybrid V8, signaling a return to top-level prototype racing. The car debuted in 2023 with BMW M Team RLL in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. In 2024, BMW M Motorsport returns to the FIA World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, competing for overall victory for the first time since 1999.

THE FIA WEC JOURNEY

Since 2024, BMW M Team WRT enters two BMW M Hybrid V8 in the FIA World Endurance Championship representing the German manufacturer on the highest level of endurance racing. The teams race in several areas of the world: America, the Middle East, Europe and Asia which includes important logisitics. 

The BMW M Team WRT operates from WRT Headquartes located in Bierset, in Belgium.

The team scored its first podium in the Hypercar class in Fuji in 2024 with a second place for Raffaele Marciello, Dries Vanthoor and Marco Wittmann. 

BMW M Team WRT IMSA Campaign

Team WRT opens an exciting chapter of its racing life. As of 2026, the Belgian squad founded in 2009 will field the BMW M Hybrid V8 in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, in addition to the FIA World Endurance Championship programme.

The BMW M Team WRT GTP programme will cover the entire IMSA season, including both endurance and sprint races.

​BMW M Team WRT will operate out of its new base near Charlotte, North Carolina. The facilities are located in an area which is a notorious motor racing hub, close to all necessary suppliers and service providers.​
