RACE REVIEW

> Podium for JK Vernay and WRT in the Netherlands

Great performance for the Leopard Lukoil WRT driver at the TT Circuit in Assen: a solid 2nd in Race 1 and a strong comeback to 7th in Race 2 on his Audi RS 3 LMS give to the Frenchman some precious points in the TCR Europe and TCR Benelux Series.

The Assen weekend didn’t start in the right way on Friday, as Jean-Karl Vernay didn’t take part in the FP2 session after damaging the front suspension of his Audi RS 3 LMS during the previous session, when he closed in 11th.

But Saturday went definitely better with the Leopard Lukoil driver claimed the Pole Position in afternoon’s Race 1: Vernay clocked a provisional fastest lap of 1:44.607 that was immediately beaten by Files’ 1:44.522; but the Briton was demoted to 4th due to a penalty occurred during the previous event at the Hungaroring.

As the Race 1 started, Vernay sprinted well from the pole and took the lead from Nagy, Files, Tassi, Richard, Comini and Potty. On the Lap 5, Nagy and Vernay ran abreast in a chicane, Nagy hit a tyre stack but managed to take the lead. Four laps later the Frenchman attacked Nagy who resisted and then pulled away till the finish line. Borković delivered a thrilling performance, as he was able to recover to 6th, a result that helped him to retake the leadership in the standings.

On Sunday Race 2, Tassi became the eighth different winner in the 2018 TCR Europe: the young Hungarian led for the whole distance and crossed the finishing line ahead of the title contenders Azcona & Borković. Started with a reverse grid, the race saw the safety car’s entry on track for the Nagy’s incident; when the action resumed with 8 mins to go, Vernay managed to keep P9 in the hectic field and after a strong door-to-door fight with his rivals he moved up his Audi RS 3 LMS to final P7.

Jay Kay is currently in 5th place overall in the Drivers’ standings, reducing the gap 44 points from the top. With 2 rounds only to run, the Leopard Lukoil WRT Team will give their best till the end!

#69 Jean-Karl VERNAY:
“It's frustrating to lose a win that we should have claimed, but that's racing. Everything went well in the initial laps, but then I was a little bit late at the braking into the first corner and Nagy passed. Given yesterday’s heavy repairs to the chassis, not everything was perfect in the car, especially in brake balance.  I was able to keep side-by-side with him and retake the lead, but then we arrived at turns 3 and 4 and there was gravel all over the tarmac and couldn't keep the line. I am a little annoyed, as the points lost would have been very useful.”
