Audi Sport customer racing is bringing a prominent guest entrant to round three of the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup at the Nürburgring. René Rast, who won the DTM title last year in his debut season, will be racing in an Audi RS 3 LMS for the first time. As a result, the 31-year-old Audi factory driver is facing a double commitment from May 10 to 13 because at the same event, in an Audi R8 LMS from Audi Sport Team WRT, he will contest the 24-hour race as well
Up to two guest entrants per event will receive a “wild card,” so further enhancing the attractiveness of the WTCR – FIA World Touring Car Cup. Two Audi RS 3 LMS cars are registered as regular entrants by Team WRT under name “Audi Sport Leopard Lukoil Team”. In round three, an additional TCR touring car from Audi Sport with guest entrant René Rast is going to join the field. For Rast, the Nürburgring is “familiar turf.” In the Audi R8 LMS, he has been a regular entrant of the 24-hour race.
Thirty-one-year-old Rast said: “Competing against the world’s best drivers in a touring car now is fantastic. It’s a nice challenge. The field includes four world champions, plus many other title winners. These are big names and I’m looking forward to being pitted against them on home soil.”
Rast has spent almost his entire career within the Volkswagen Group, starting by winning the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup in 2005 before capturing the DTM title with Audi in 2017. He is a triple Porsche Supercup champion, has raced in FIA Formula E and was sixth at Le Mans in 2016. He also has significant experience racing front-wheel-drive cars and vast knowledge of the 25.378-kilometre Nordschleife layout. Driving an Audi R8 LMS with Team WRT, he added several trophies to his records including a victory in the 2014 Total 24H of Spa.
